Report from Disney 2001

Disney 2001 -- It's a New Day in Diabetes

Over 300 families -- 1,100 people in all -- from 37 states and 15 countries met at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Florida from July 18 to 22, 2001 to share, learn, and have fun. Kids who had never seen another person with diabetes found kindred spirits in blood tests, insulin injections, and pump boluses. Parents, many for the first time, realized that their concerns and struggles were shared by hundreds of others. Health care professionals talked to families and kids, sharing guidance and experiences with families eager to learn. And our generous sponsors were overwhelmed as kids and parents visited their booths to learn about the very latest in diabetes care products.

Registration Registration opened at noon on Wednesday, July 18th, though early-arriving families began to stop by beginning mid-morning to sign in. Volunteers, identified by their blue shirts, had worked throughout the day on Tuesday to prepare the registration packets, filled with name tags, event tickets, and t-shirts. The program guide was delayed due to a delivery problem, but arrived in time to hand out on Thursday morning. More volunteers staffed the registration booth each day of the conference to help families register and find conference sessions. About 30 new families registered on-site, adding to our pre-registered guests. One new family even flew in from Montreal, Canada, after learning of the conference from the web site.
