Food Tips You Might Not Know

Sugar Sweetened Cereals are OK

According to a report in the September 1995 issue of Diabetes Forecast, it's OK for kids to eat pre-sweetened cereals, as long as you watch the overall amount of carbohydrates. They cite the following examples:

So while you might get to eat more Rice Krispies (by volume), you'd actually get less carbohydrates by eating the Captain Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch! If you decide to work pre-sweetened cereal into your child's breakfast meal plan, remember that 15 grams of carbohydrates equals one Starch/Bread Exchange.

Ice Cream as a Bed Time Snack

That's right! Ice cream is a great snack right before bed. We learned that at overnight diabetes camp (run by the ADA). Regular vanilla or chocolate only, though. No rocky road! The sugar content isn't that high and the fat takes hours to be digested. It's a nice treat for children who don't get many food treats.
