A Survey for Adults with Diabetes and Parents of Children with Diabetes
Background:
A test taken from cord blood of newborns can determine the likelihood of developing Type 1 diabetes. Relatives (siblings or offspring) of Type 1 patients are at an increased risk of diabetes that varies depending on their HLA genotype and HLA haplotype sharing with the diabetic relative. Approximately 20-40% of the relatives with the HLA-DR3/4,DQB1*0302 genotype develop pre-diabetic autoimmunity in the first 2-3 years of life and an estimated 70% of those develop diabetes over the next 5 years.
Results
The Barbara Davis Center wanted to thank all of those who participated in our survey. We had close to 200 responses, with the majority of responses (76%) being from parents of diabetic children. The survey helped us to assess where you, as parents and as diabetic adults, stand as far as interest in knowing your newborn's genetic risk and your interest in the different forms of prevention being considered.
- 85% of those surveyed said they would want to participate in a trial to tell their newborn's genetic risk.
- In analyzing your responses to the different prevention trials, we found some of the numbers surprising:
- 61% said they would be interested in any of the listed possibilities if recommended by their specialist
- 40% would consider vitamin supplements
- 36% would consider giving breast milk as long as possible, followed by specialized formula
- 31% would consider giving oral insulin
- 27% would consider nasal spray insulin
- Only 18% would consider giving insulin shots in a prevention trial
Again, thank you for your participation in our survey, it will help us in shaping the up coming preventative trials.
